Drywall Crack Repair: How to Fix Cracked Walls Yourself

Hairline drywall cracks are a cosmetic fix: joint compound, a sanding block, and paint, for under $20. Cracks wider than about 1/8 inch, or ones that keep returning, need mesh tape and several compound coats. Diagonal cracks spreading from door or window corners can indicate settling and are worth photographing and monitoring. NestBit identifies which case you have from a photo and lists the exact materials.

The repair, step by step

  1. Widen the hairline crack slightly with a utility knife so compound can key in.
  2. For larger cracks, apply self-adhesive mesh tape over the line.
  3. Apply joint compound in a thin coat with a 4 to 6 inch knife, feathering the edges.
  4. Let it dry fully, sand lightly, and apply a second (and for taped cracks, third) wider coat.
  5. Sand smooth, prime the patch, and paint. Skipping primer is why patches show through paint.

Materials: joint compound ($8 to $15), mesh tape ($5), sanding sponge ($5), primer and paint you likely own. Tools: utility knife, taping knife, sanding block.

Matching the wall texture

On smooth walls, feathering and priming is enough. On textured walls, match the texture with spray texture in a can before priming, practicing on cardboard first. Texture mismatch is the most visible tell of an amateur patch.

Frequently asked questions

When is a wall crack serious?

Widening cracks, diagonal cracks from corners that reopen after repair, horizontal cracks with bulging, or cracks paired with sticking doors deserve a professional structural look.

Can I just paint over a hairline crack?

Paint alone reopens within months because the crack moves. Fill it with compound first; it takes fifteen minutes and holds.

How long does the repair take?

Active work is under an hour, spread over two or three days because compound coats must dry between passes.
